Tenerife, Canary Islands

There was a long vacation in December 2012 and since I have already bought flight ticket to Barcelona in February 2013 then I planned not going anywhere. My first plan to spend the vacation was to paint my son’s bedroom 😀 However,  it was a long vacation and I did not really want to stay in Trondheim since it was dark and quiet during that time. I need to escape from winter .-)

Two weeks before the long christmas vacation, I checked on restplass and searched for a cheap flight ticket to anywhere out of Norway:-). I found one cheap ticket from Oslo – Tenerife which cost 1995 NOK (266.4 EUR) for one people including one week accommodation (but it was not specified which hotel and the location). I thought it won’t be a problem; I only need a place to sleep, taking shower and put my luggage:-). I bought the ticket and also pay additional cost for bus trip from and to airport and meal during the flight. I ended up paying 4505 NOK (601.5 EUR) for me and my son 🙂

I took lavprisekspressen bus from Trondheim to Gardemoen airport in Oslo and it cost 738 NOK (98.5 EUR) for two people. For the trip back, I took train since the train schedule was a bit later than bus (taking the bus again will be too risky because I need to count the time spend after landing, picking up the luggage, etc.). The train cost 798 NOK (106.6 EUR) for two people.

The airline provided by the tour company (Ving) was Thomas Cook Airlines. We departed at 10:00 in the morning and arrived at 14:35 (local time). It took 6 hours to fly from Oslo to Tenerife. In the Reina Sofia airport, Tenerife, there were already many people from Ving in the exit door. They had some signs to show which bus you should take based on the hotel destinations. Since I booked the trip without knowing where I was going to stay, I had to report to special desk and there they told me in which hotel I was going to stay, the hotel location and which bus number I should take to the hotel. I was placed in a hotel outside the northern city of Puerto de la Cruz (hotel Acuario). The hotel was OK, it has its own swimming pool. We spent the night by walking near the hotel to find a restaurant and we ended up eating paella at one restaurant near the bus station. We also went to supermarket to buy some bread and milk for our breakfast the next day.

Before traveling to Tenerife, I had already made a list of which places that I was going to visit. I made my own itinerary based on simonseeks website:-).

The first plan was to go to mount Teide, it is the highest point in Spain. There was only one bus from Puerto de la Cruz to mt. Teide and it left at 0915 in the morning and trip back from mt. Teide to Puerto de la Cruz at 1600 in the afternoon. I almost missed the bus but luckily at that time there were lots of turis and the bus company add 1 more bus to drive to mt. Teide. It took 2 hours by bus from the bus station to Mt. Teide. During the trip, the bus made one stop at small restaurant/shop to refresh and we can go out to see the surrounding area.

Once we arrived at the site, we had to buy ticket to ride the cable car to La Rambleta (the upper cable car station) where we can choose three different routes. The first is route nr. 10 to the crater of Teide, the second is route nr. 11 to La Fortaleza and the third is route nr. 12  to Pico Viejo Vantage point. Route nr. 10 will take you to the highest point, but you need to obtain special permit to access this route. Route nr. 11 gives view of the entire north side of Tenerife. Route nr. 12 offers the view of crater of Pico Viejo (800 m in diameter and 3,104 m above sea level). We took the easiest path which is route nr. 11 🙂

The next day we went to visit Loro Parque. We walked from our hotel to Plaza Reyes Católicos then taking free train ride to the park. There are lots of species of animals and many shows in the park including orca, dolphins, sea lions  and loro shows. We spent the day by walking inside the park and watch the shows (except loro shows).

Our trip the next day was to visit Los Gigantes for whale watching. Los Gigantes is a is a resort town in the Santiago del Teide municipality on the west coast of the Canary Island Tenerife. Its main feature are the giant rock formationsAcantilados de Los Gigantes, that rise from the sea to a height of 500-800 metres (1,640–2,625 ft) after which the town has been named. Los Gigantes means “The Giants” (copy from wiki). It took two hours bus trip from Puerto de la Cruz to Los Gigantes but it’s worth the trip.

The next day we went to Siam water park (siampark). We took the bus to Costa Adeje and then took free bus to the park. We spent the whole day playing in the water park 🙂

After taking the long bus trip two days in a row, we decided just to go to the beach near our hotel (playa jardin). The beach has black sandy sand and my son really enjoy playing with the wave while I was sitting and reading while watching him playing. We spent the rest of our holiday by walk around the city center and playing at the beach.

On the way back to Oslo, our flight was a bit delayed. We almost lost our train to Trondheim, but we managed it with a bit of run with our luggage to the train stop :-D. It was really nice visiting Tenerife and If I had the chance I would like to  visit another islands in Canary 🙂
